Carminantonio and Bruna came to Baltimore in 1995 and worked to set up establishments for others before finally opening their own shop, Piedigrotta, in 2002. They make everything by hand with the best ingredients available. From breads to pastries of all kinds to sandwiches and salads, everything is of the highest quality, which is why Piedigrotta was voted Baltimore's Best Bakery by the City Paper in 2003.

The name Piedigrotta comes from the first bakery where Carminantonio worked. This bakery took its name from a section of Naples near Carminantonio's home town of Avellino. Carminantonio has always kept the name Piedigrotta because it symbolizes his roots in southern Italy, the memories of which have stayed with him throughout his travels.

Today, when you go to the shop, you will undoubtedly be greeted by the fine customer service skills of Bruna, offering you biscotti and telling you about new products, while through the glass window Carminantonio bakes in the back room.

You will come in to grab a quick coffee or pastry and end up staying for half an hour of delightful conversation and possibly a tour of the baking area. For Carminantonio and Bruna, their shop is more than a business; it is their profession and what they love doing. You will feel the love with which they work every time you stop in for some of their delicious baked goods.
